What is global education?
It is a way of teaching that allows students to investigate the world, weigh perspectives, communicate ideas and take action. Many teachers already do much of this--especially the first three items, and there is an increase in the recognition of the importance of taking action through project/problem-based learning.
Why should we seek global competence for our students?
The economy, the environment, our national security go beyond our borders. We must prepare our students so they know the world beyond their own communities. There is often the belief that we are the greatest country in the world, so why should we bother to learn about others. But it is through understanding other cultures, social systems, economies, and environmental issues that we become great.
What is the purpose of this guide?
This guide is designed to support teachers interested in global education for the students they teach. It provides resources and examples of how to integrate global competencies into the curriculum without feeling like a complete overhaul must take place. Illinois now has a Global Scholar designation for high school students. It is our responsibility as educators to expose and prepare students to increase their capacity to fully engage in our world.
